Some usefull info about the clubCarlisle United Football Club
Est.: 1904
Division: 3
Chairman: John Courtney
Manager: Roddy Collins
Club Captain: Peter Murphy
Following a failed bid to take over Manchester united, Michael
Knighton desperate to fill his ambition of having a premiership team
decided to take over a lower division club and
bring them up through the leagues. He turned his attention to English Footballs Northern outpost Carlisle in 1992.
By the end of the 1993/94 season Carlisle were in the Playoffs and lost out to Wycombe in the Semi finals at Adams
Park. All was going well in 93 Knighton had paid out a still club record transfer fee of -‹¨«121,000 to bring David Reeves in from Notts County.
The following season the dream looked likely as Carlisle stormed the third
division taking 91 points from the season to clinch the Championship. The 94/95 season also saw the Blue Army travel
to Wembley for the Auto Windscreens final against Birmingham losing out to a Paul Tate goal, in a game that was the
tester for the new Golden goal extra time. Yep that's right he scored the first golden goal to lift the Windscreens prize.
The manager at the time Mick Wadsworth only lasted for a few games into the new season as Carlisle started badly in the second and never really recovered being relegated after just 1 season. However new boss Mervyn Day didn't let that get him down and guided United to third place back in the third division to take the club back
into the second. Another trip to Wembley also came in that season and this time a penalty shoot out meant that
Carlisle beat Colchester to lift the trophy.
Again Mervyn didn't last long with Knighton sacking him a few
months into the season after another poor start, which was starting to turn around. Knighton himself took over for the rest of the season and the warning signs were there, eventually at the end of the season sitting in 23rd place it was back to the third division. This is around the time Knigton appeared to lose the plot.
The 98/99 season saw Carlisle survive on the last day of the season thanks to Jimmy Glass scoring the most memorable goal in the clubs history.
The keeper signed on special dispensation from the FA after transfer deadline day slammed the ball home to give Carlisle the win and more importantly preserve their league status.
Following that season managers came and went with relegation an issue every season up until Roddy Collins took over from Ian Atkins in 2001 for his first stint and had the Blues save with over 7 games to go, however in Knighton's, who was actually
banned from being a director due to dodgy accounting and decisions, last proper act as chairman he sacked Collins for comments made against the Chairman. Throughout the last few years many buyers for the club have come and gone,
but during the summer of 2002 Irish Umbro tycoon John Courtney came to the rescue and finally bought the club.
He reinstalled Roddy Collins and together they set about taking a squad of 7 professional players at the end of the summer and building a team to first of all keep the club in the division, then push for promotion the season after.
Another trip to the Au to Windscreens final, this time in Cardiff also came about but defeat again at the hands of Bristol City but a superb day out and the Cumbrian faithful new we were save with a few games to go.
