World Cup 2006

Portugal WC06 Profile

Portugal National TeamPortugal's best finish at the World Cup has been 3rd at the time of Portugese giant Eusebio, but suprisingly the team has only qualified twice since then.
Times have changed and Portugal now has a huge list of top quality stars as seen in Euro 96, where they made it all the way to the final.
Qualification for Portugal was one of the easiest as they glided past their group with a ton of goals.

Ecuador WC06 Profile

In 2002 Ecuador played in their first World Cup, unbelievably it was their first time playing out of South America.

So the experience was more about learning, but currently Ecuador still
have alot to learn as they lost to Poland very easily in tough conditions.

One of Ecuadors advantage is that in their Stadium they play at high alititude, this affects players in that they are unable to breathe naturally.

With these conditions they defeated Brazil and Argentina to finish 3rd in their group.

England WC06 Profile

England are one of the teams aiming not only to do well but win the World Cup.
They have however recently suffered a huge setback with Wayne Rooney getting injured.
They also have key striker Michael Owen in similar problems, along with defender Ashley Cole.
Ranked no9 in the world, through some good peformances against Austria, Poland, England cruised through their group on top to qualify, suffering only 1 defeat against Northern Ireland.

Owen believes that England are contenders because they have alot of players that are simply World Class.

Lippi Focus

Marcello LippiItaly are relying on Marcello Lippi, the man is over the moon about been given the opportunity to coach in the World Cup.
After a succesful period at Juventus, he was approached two weeks after and he hasnt looked back since.
The Azzuri have been grouped with Ghana, Czech Republic and the USA.

Poland WC06 Profile

PolandPolands major accomplishment was in the 1982 World Cup, but they hope to better this peformance in 2006.
The group has been kind and they are definetely in with a strong shot to progress into the 2nd Round.
Some star players featured are Dudek , Zurawski and Olisadebe. Although not very well known names, they are strong players and will look to shine.

Switzerland WC06 Profile

Switzerland FansIn the group with France, Togo and Korea, the Swiss have a great chance of making the 2nd round.
The Swiss have a new generation of young players, mixed in with an astute tactical Coach. Featured here is the qualifying match against Cyprus, Ireland, to finish in their group 2nd, but undefeated.
Switzerland then played off against Turkey, but overcoming not only the team but the crowd.

Trinidad and Tobago WC06 Profile

Trinidad TobagoAfter finishing fourth in their group, Trinidad has done well.
Part of the success is due to Trinidad's Dutch Coach.
The team started off by luring Chris Birch, who was born in England, to make him the first white player to play for Trinidad.
The team didnt do so well away from home, but results at home were good.
So we visit a match in their qualifying group against Mexico.
The team then had to play off against the 4th placed Asian team

Costa Rica Profile Part 2

Costa RicaThis time we not only focus on the team, but the country itself, with its beatiful landscapes, people and its passions.
Kicking it off with an interview from Juan Parin with background pictures of the country celebrating on the streets.
We also look back at past Qualification and how this time around in their qualifying, Costa Rica started off very badly, but recovered to make it back into the World Cup Finals, for the third successive time.
